UK’s Best Web Hosting Reviews for 2021
1. Hostinger – Best Value Web Hosting UK
Hostinger has over 30 million clients worldwide and provides the best cheap web hosting services in the UK. They have clear-cut plans for a wide variety of users, allowing you to tailor their service to your needs.
Their cheapest web hosting plan is an insane £0.99/mo and comes with 24/7 support, 10GB of storage space, 1 email address, multiple web server locations for you to choose from, and their custom-built control panel, how’s that for value for money!
Regardless of the plan you choose, Hostinger offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee and also allows you to monitor their server status in real-time. They have a server farm located in the UK, as well as others worldwide, allowing you to decide which location best fits your client base.
Despite offering very affordable plans, Hostinger doesn’t skip on speed, with even unoptimised websites loading in under 800 ms (their servers have great response times). If you do ever have a problem, you can get in touch with Hostinger’s fantastic support team via email, live chat, or logging a support ticket. Overall, if you’re looking for an affordable service that gives you high-quality connectivity, Hostinger is an excellent first choice (which is backed up by their positive customer reviews).
They can also take care of your .co.uk domain names. Truly a no-brainer and deserves the #1 spot on our list of the best web hosting companies!
- Comes with a free website builder
- Easy to use interface with a very informative dashboard
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- Great support
- Super affordable
- Fast server response times
2. SiteGround – Best WordPress Hosting
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
SiteGround is one of the only hosting providers that comes officially recommended by WordPress, though you can use your own CMS if you prefer. They offer three shared web hosting packages, ranging from the base StartUp plan, which gives hosting for one website and 10 GB of storage. The next two tiers come with unlimited hosting for sites and 20 GB of SSD storage, which is probably the best option for small businesses. They also offer a site-transfer service, which is incredibly useful if you have an established site that you want to move over.
To ensure consistently high loading speeds, SiteGround has a custom-built plugin that can boost site loading times by four times and increase the number of hits your site can handle by 100 times. This feature comes standard for all plans, except for the basic StartUp plan.
In addition to some impressive additional features, SiteGround offers excellent customer support, including live chat, phone, and a ticketing system. If you’re new to website design, SiteGround has published many online tutorials to help get you started. Even if you’re a WordPress pro, you’ll find some valuable information about how to optimise your site and enhance your security.
SiteGround is another web host with an impressive performance. Their uptime averages at 99.99%, and their page load time is significantly lower than one second. Thanks to a handy plugin available in the two higher plans, the page loading time can decrease to become four times faster than other pages.
SiteGround includes two other shared hosting packages at reasonable prices. The GrowBig plan includes unlimited websites, emails, and databases, all for £8.99 per month. The storage is still limited, though, at 20GB.
The GoGeek plan costs £12.99 monthly and allows for about 100,000 monthly visitors, 40 GB of storage, and the same unlimited features as in the previous program.
In addition to the above plans, SiteGround offers WordPress and Woocommerc Hosting packages (for the same price as the shared hosting plans), as well as Cloud Hosting options starting at £48 per month.
- Recommended and supported by WordPress
- Many data centres, including the UK, Asia, the US, and the Netherlands
- Responsive support
- SuperCacher plug-in
- Higher renewal costs
3. A2 Hosting – Best Hosting for Resellers
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
A2 Hosting offers several features, which makes up for the fact that they don’t have servers in the UK. The main appeal of this host is that they provide unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth on all their plans. They also support Linux-based systems in addition to ordinary Windows web hosting.
When you sign up for an A2 hosting account, you get a one-script installer that works on most CMS systems, making setup a breeze. Each setup solution is customised to work with that particular platform, ensuring you get an optimal configuration for your CMS, from WordPress to Drupal, Joomla, and Magneto.
Like GreenGeeks, A2 Hosting doesn’t offer a server in the United Kingdom. They do have two servers outside of the United States, but they are in Amsterdam and Singapore. Nevertheless, the highlight of A2 Hosting is their Turbo Server with speeds up to 20 times faster than other options.
These Turbo Servers limit how many users are on a server, ensuring each person has a high-performance website. They also include SSDs and caching, which give an uptime of 99.98% on average.
In addition to the cheapest shared hosting option, A2 Hosting provides three other plans.
The first is for VPS hosting, costing £4.23 monthly. With this plan, A2 Hosting ensures security, speed, and ease of use. If you opt for the reseller hosting option for £11.15 a month, you can establish individual hosting accounts, include a billing system, and use the WHM control panel.
The last option is much more expensive, starting at £84.16 monthly. This choice is ideal for larger businesses as it offers complete isolation, free site migration, and customization of the server’s power and resources.
- Unlimited bandwidth and space
- Free site migration
- Support for WordPress and other CMS systems
- Support for Windows and Linux web hosting
- No dedicated UK servers
4. GreenGeeks – Great Web Hosting for Beginners
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
GreenGeeks made a splash with their commitment to giving back to the environment by putting their energy consumption back three-fold into the grid via wind power. If you’re eco-conscious, you’ll appreciate the fact that you are helping save the environment by using their web service. But, apart from that, does GreenGeeks make the cut?
Simply put, yes they do. The web hosting service offers unlimited disk space, bandwidth, and email accounts on all their plans. They also provide one free domain name, which is an excellent option for new businesses that want to make their mark.
The web host speed depends on a lot of factors, such as the location of the nearest server. Unfortunately, GreenGeeks doesn’t have any servers in the United Kingdom yet, as you may have guessed from the price listed in US dollars. They do have a server in the Netherlands, but most of them are in the United States.
Nevertheless, GreenGeeks ensures that your website still has a great loading speed, so your SEO isn’t affected. Even if you are using a server located far away, their monitoring system is continually reviewing your website’s activity for potential lags. Plus, they have a PowerCacher, PHP7, and SSDs all working to give you the quickest speed possible.
All of these tools work together to provide an impressive uptime. While GreenGeeks promises 99.99% uptime, it often dips a bit below that number, but not too much to significantly affect your website.
Apart from the Lite Plan for bloggers, GreenGeeks also offers a Pro and a Premium Plan. The Pro option costs USD $5.95 per month and promises two times the website performance. Likewise, the Premium package provides four times the speed for USD $11.95 a month.
- Environmentally-friendly hosting service
- Unlimited storage and bandwidth
- Domain name with every plan
- Free CDN
- No UK servers
- Payment in USD
5. Kinsta – Best Managed WordPress Hosting
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
If you run a WordPress site, you’ll probably want dedicated WordPress hosting. Kinsta offers a full suite of services and features that are exclusively designed for WordPress users who don’t want the hassle of managing their page. These services include updating WordPress and keeping up to date with the latest security patches. The service also offers a few neat add-ons like DDoS protection, hardware firewalls, and a free SSL certificate, regardless of the plan you choose.
Unlike many other hosting services, Kinsta doesn’t have physical servers and instead relies on third-party web hosting services. The main advantage of this is that you don’t have to worry about your server’s location since Kinsta will always pick the best site from Google Cloud.
If you’re worried about losing your data, Kinsta does daily backups for free, and you can pay an extra fee per additional backup. The service also has a hack guarantee, and if your hosting account does get hacked, the support team will help mitigate the damage and repair the site for free.
- Will fully manage your WordPress website and provide support from experts
- Uses Google Cloud, which includes a UK server location
- Impressive security features as well as a hack guarantee
- Includes Cloudflare CDN for blazing-fast speeds
- No phone support

6. BlueHost – Great Overseas Web Host
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
BlueHost is a well-established web hosting provider that has hosted millions of sites since it started in 1996 (comparable to other huge companies like Godaddy and Hostgator). The company offers some of the best website hosting solutions, including shared hosting, dedicated servers, and virtual private servers (VPS hosting). If you have a WordPress site, you can get managed WordPress hosting packages that include automatic updates, one-click setup, and access to hundreds of themes and plug-ins.

After the Basic Plan, Bluehost offers a Plus package for £4.44 per month. This option includes unlimited storage, bandwidth, websites, and domains for less than £2 more than the starter package.
For £5.18 a month, the Choice Plus Plan includes everything the Plus option does but with a backup and domain protection. The Pro Plan is the most expensive shared hosting option at £10.40 per month. It includes two spam experts instead of one and a dedicated IP.
Apart from these shared hosting plans, Bluehost offers three dedicated hosting packages starting at £59.66 per month and 3 VPS hosting plans starting at £14.16 monthly.
Despite handling millions of sites, BlueHost still has sound, responsive customer service, including live chat, phone, and support tickets. You can expect to get a reply almost immediately with the live chat and within several hours for a ticket.
- Responsive customer service
- Managed WordPress packages take the guesswork out of running your site
- Includes one free CDN
- Lots of hosting plans to meet a diverse set of needs
- Terms and conditions constrain unlimited bandwidth
7. Cloudways – Best Cloud Hosting for Ecommerce
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
Cloudways offers cloud hosting, so instead of having their dedicated servers, they use third-party options. The company has partnered with Google Cloud, AWS, StackPath, Vultr, Linode, and Digital Ocean, giving you plenty of choice of server provider and location. Doing so allows them to offer the best speeds for all their clients across the globe.
The main draw of Cloudways is that you’re free to change your plan monthly. The web host operates on a month-to-month hosting system, which gives you the flexibility to adapt as your website grows. Since you don’t feel pressured to take a higher-end plan, you also save money by not buying features that you don’t need.
Cloudways also offers managed hosting services for several tools, including WordPress, Magneto, and Laravel, allowing you to focus on your business without having to deal with the hassles of hosting.
As previously mentioned, the perk of using a cloud-based web host is the lack of server connectivity problems. Cloudways boasts on and incredibly 100% uptime on their websites, and the loading speed averages only half a second.
Plus, each of the available third-party providers has a data centre in the United Kingdom. The proximity ensures faster speeds to UK users.
The prices for Cloudways vary drastically based on the package options. There are four separate monthly plans for each of the five third-party options, and you can also opt to pay hourly.
The cheapest option is with DigitalOcean for USD $10 a month. Their highest plan, which includes 8GB of RAM and 160GB of storage, costs USD $80 monthly. Similarly, Linode’s monthly prices range from USD $12 to $90 per month.
Vultr offers standard and high-frequency plans, the latter costing more. The prices vary from USD $11 to $100 a month. Likewise, Google Cloud charges between USD $33.30 and $226.05 per month for their plans.
AWS has the most costly plans, with the cheapest being USD $36.51 per month. The highest option is USD $274.33 monthly.
- Multiple third-party server providers to choose from
- Scalable plans
- No long-term commitment, giving you the flexibility to adapt your hosting service to your website needs
- Managed hosting services take the hassle out of running your website
- Only offers cloud hosting plans
- The user interface can be intimidating for non-tech savvy users
8. HostPapa – Great Cheap Web Host
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
HostPapa is an independently owned Canadian hosting company that focuses on sustainable business practices and promotes using clean energy in its hosting solutions. The company offers several shared hosting plans, ranging from the starter account that provides the basics to the BusinessPro plan that offers premium servers, dedicated IP, and wildcard SSL certificate.
They also offer WordPress hosting, Reseller hosting, and VPS hosting solutions.
The service also comes with a website builder that uses an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. The shared hosting plans get a limited version of the builder, which includes a couple of templates and a limit of three pages per site.
HostPapa offers three main plans, the Starter, Business, and Business Pro.
The Business option is currently discounted to the same price as the starter package, £1.95 a month. This upgrade gives you unlimited websites and disk paces, as well as some advanced features, including unlimited emails, add-on domains, and MYSQL databases.
By paying £6.14 a month for the Business Pro Plan, you can get all of the unlimited services and advanced features of the Business option, plus higher security and performance.

- Even the starter plans have hosting for two domains
- Telephone support in the UK
- Versatile plans to meet your particular needs
- No dedicated customer service
- 48-hour money-back guarantee instead of the advertised 30-day promise
- Annual billing, even on per month plans
9. Hostgator – Experienced Web Host
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
HostGator is a well-known and established company that offers many services in website hosting and eCommerce. The basic shared hosting plan includes a free domain name for the first year, one free SSL certificate, and unlimited storage and bandwidth. However, you will have to pay extra for security and backups since HostGator considers them to be additional features.
HostGator’s website management services are some of the best in the business, showing off how iterative design over several years can pay off. The company uses cPanel, an industry-standard management software that is easy to use and understand, even for relative novices. The web hosting service integrates well with most CMS platforms, as well as some more niche products like Moodle and phpBB. If you don’t have a CMS, all HostGator plans include access to Weebly, a free website builder that has an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.
Finally, in terms of support, HostGator’s offerings are adequate. They offer live chat, phone, and email support, but users have found that the best you can expect is average service. The same is true for the knowledge base on HostGator’s site, which is fine but won’t offer any novel insights for experienced users.
HostGator has ranked exceptionally well in terms of their website performance. So far, most of the web hosting companies have made some sort of claim to a 99.9% uptime, but that’s often a stretch. For HostGator, the uptime promise of 99.99% is a genuine guarantee.
Their webpages also load quickly, and they help coach users on how to optimize each site.
In terms of shared hosting plans, HostGator has two additional packages. The Baby Plan, starting at USD $3.95 monthly, includes unlimited domains, storage, and bandwidth.
The business plan includes those unlimited features plus free SEO tools, dedicated IP, and Positive SSL. All of these features cost just USD $5.95 per month.
- Support for multiple CMS systems
- One free domain name for the first year
- UK servers
- Expensive renewal rates
- Have to pay for backups and security features
- Customer support is average
10. DreamHost – Experienced Business Web Host
Phone, Live Chat, Support Tickets
DreamHost is an established web hosting provider that has over 1.5 million sites. It offers some of the best web hosting plans for people on a budget, with unlimited bandwidth and disk space on all their shared hosting plans. Unlike many other hosting services, you get 97 days to decide whether you’re happy with the service. Also, their per month price renewal after the first year is significantly less than the two or three-fold increase of other web hosting providers.
DreamHost also offers a 100% uptime guarantee, which excludes scheduled maintenance and user errors. Many hosting services provide an uptime guarantee but give themselves a bit of wiggle room by stating that their service will be up 99.95% of the time.
Another appealing feature is that WordPress comes pre-installed and will be ready to go when you sign up, which is perfect for novices and experts alike. DreamHost offers several web builders, including their own Remixer, as well as Weebly, Wix, and Squarespace.
Furthermore, their site loading times are about 1.3 seconds, which is an impressive speed.
DreamHost offers a total of nine plans divided into three categories. The cheapest option discussed above is called the Shared Starter. They also provide a Shared Unlimited for USD $4.95 per month. This plan includes unlimited emails and websites.
The next category is DreamPress, which offers packages with WordPress websites. The prices range from USD $16.95 to $71.95 a month, with varying levels of monthly visitors allowed.
The final group consists of VPS plans. The prices start at USD $13.75 for the Basic Plan and can exceed USD $110 per month for the Enterprise option.
- 100% uptime guarantee
- Carbon neutral
- Lower per month price if you sign up for three years with no price increase on renewal
- Generous money-back guarantee
- Limited live chat support
How to choose a UK web hosting service!
Looking at the insane rise in internet users in the UK, getting your business or project online should be high on your list of priorities.
When you first start looking at web host hosting providers, you may be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of options available. Not only are there hundreds of web hosts, but they all also use terms that can be confusing if you’re not techy. If you run a one-page small business website, your requirements will be significantly different from those of a large multi-national company, and it doesn’t make sense to pay for features you won’t need.
We looked at a lot of factors, we’ve explained them below. We used and reviewed the same factors to build this UK web hosting comparison. As a side-note, our top web hosts are GDPR compliant (quite important these days).
Is the data centre located in the United Kingdom?
The server location can have an impact on your site speed, but probably not as much as you may think. While you may notice a decrease in speed if someone from across the world accesses your website, local differences are generally insignificant. If you’re running a small business, keeping your server in-country is usually more than sufficient to keep up in speed.
You won’t notice the difference whether your server sits in Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds, as long as it’s in the UK. However, if the majority of your customer base isn’t in the UK, consider using a web host with international servers instead.
Do they have an uptime guarantee?
Uptime is the amount of time per month that your website is live. Ideally, you want it to be up all the time since downtime will cost you customers and money. Many providers advertise as much as 99.9% uptime with a money-back guarantee, but it’s worthwhile the check out web hosting reviews to see whether or not these claims are valid.
Check how much (SSD) storage they offer
Calculating the amount of storage you’ll need will require a bit of trial and error. If you have tons of media on your site, the chances are you’ll need at least several gigabytes worth of storage.
If you run a relatively small site with little traffic, you can get away with far less. Our advice is to keep an eye on your monthly traffic and adjust your hosting option accordingly.
Do you need unlimited bandwidth?
Bandwidth describes how much information can move between your site to the end-user. The more users you expect to have, the higher your bandwidth should be. Also, the more information your website has, in the form of images, video, and text, the more bandwidth you’ll need to get that data across effectively. If you expect to get 10,000 visitors or less, you can get away with around 10 GB of bandwidth, but as your site grows, so will your bandwidth needs.
How are their sites performing in terms of speed?
Speed is the measure of how fast your website loads under normal circumstances. The main factors that influence speed are the server location and performance, your allocated bandwidth, and any caching scripts that the host may use to speed up performance.
How responsive is their support team?
One of the things that sets a great web host apart is the amount of support they provide. A useful web hosting service will have several ways to get in touch and should be responsive regardless of what method you use. Most web hosts will offer 24/7 support, allowing you to get in touch whenever you encounter an issue.
What security measures are in place?
Data breaches can be costly in terms of their impact on your reputation and in terms of the information you may lose.
When you work with a web hosting company, you trust that they have the right security measures in place to keep your information safe. Make sure to read up on any potential breaches that your host may have experienced in the last six months.
Check if SSL certificates are free
Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is an encryption technology that keeps the data between the host server and a visitor secure. Having an SSL certificate is the baseline safety measure you should take, and most reputable web hosting companies will provide at least one certificate per client.
Which Type of UK Web Hosting Is Right for You?
WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems around. It makes creating a website quick and easy. Because of the rise in popularity for this CMS, most web hosting companies have been adding WordPress hosting packages to their offering.
These are usually designed around WordPress and offer additional features like 1-click installers for WP, expert customer support, and custom caching plugins to optimise performance. You can find WordPress hosting for almost any budget, from cheaper plans on shared hosting environments, to managed hosting services that give the website a lot more resources to work with.
Free Web Hosting
Free web hosting is not the best idea in most situations. The only situation where we would potentially recommend using a free web hosting provider is if you’re just testing some things and don’t really care about the general performance of the site.
Free hosting doesn’t support high levels of traffic or bandwidth, and some providers even push ads on your site. But, if you’re on a really tight budget, or just want to tinker around and see what it’s like to push a website live, then it’s a possible option.
Cheap Web Hosting
Finding the best cheap UK web hosting service is easier than ever! Providers are constantly competing with each other on price, and the impact on quality is negligible in most cases. Web hosting plans are already very affordable, but a few providers stand out as having the cheapest plans. You do need to check the renewal prices before signing up so you don’t get a surprise when the next invoice comes (a lot of cheap web hosts only discount the first invoice to get people on board).
Small Business Hosting
Every small business in the UK should have a website, even if it’s only a small one. Luckily for us, web hosting services are generally very good at supporting small businesses. Prices are affordable, good support is easy to find, you get plenty of disk space, and a lot of UK web hosts for small businesses come with an easy-to-use website builder so you can build your own site if you can’t afford to hire a web design agency.
There are also quite a few providers that offer heavy discounts for new sign-ups, which makes it even more affordable to get your small business website live.
Finding a good web hosting provider for your UK e-commerce site will depend on a few factors. The main factor will be the size of your online store, as this will determine how much disk space and resources your site will need.
If you’re just starting out, then going for an affordable shared hosting provider is a good option. If you’re already quite big and have a lot of traffic, you might want to look at more powerful options like a VPS or cloud hosting services.
Alternatively, if you’re using WordPress, have a look at managed WordPress hosts. They are quite costly but can scale seamlessly as your product range and traffic increases on your ecommerce site. The support is also better compared to the shared hosting providers.
If you’re looking to host your clients or start your own small web hosting company in the UK, then reseller hosting is the way to go. With reseller hosting, you can bulk buy web hosting plans, and then resell them to your clients at a higher price, it’s a great way to make some recurring income.
When searching for reseller web hosting, you need to look at a few factors. Then main ones being the disk space you get and the allowed accounts for that disk space. Some reseller hosts even allow unlimited accounts, which is great, though you have to be careful you don’t overdo it and add too many sites. When you have a few too many sites to your account, you might overstretch your server resources and this could slow down all the sites on that account.
It’s also important to have an in-built management system like WHM to easily create/edit/remove accounts, so definitely check if the web host offers it before signing up.
